MOVIE REVIEW : BEAUTIFUL GIRLS (1996)

So here's a movie that I just keep on liking. Which is weird, because if I get into a conversation with someone and this flick comes up, I can't really tell them why. I can't say it's a hilarious movie, or even a particularly funny one (though Max Perlich & Michael Rappaport makes me laugh all the time). It has a decent fight scene but is obviously not an action movie, and though there are beautiful girls in the film, it isn't what I'd call romantic. It's just sort of nostalgic (okay, I'm gonna stop using italics now). It captures the whole return-to-a-New-England-hometown thing perfectly for me (so naturally, it was filmed in Minneapolis, but you know give me a break). It is not exactly a guy-bonding movie, but maybe it is.

Natalie Portman is just sweet and beautiful and overplays her character really well, somehow pulling off the occasionally wordy dialogue in a precocious way that works. (ah damn). Uma plays an interesting character plot-wise, cos she just shows up in town to (inadvertently) stir up some trouble, then disappears about 20 minutes before the end of the movie, which is a really odd thing to do. Michael Rappaport rules. Oh, so does his character. Max Perlich, as mentioned above, is funny as hell to me. He gleams my cube. The guy that plays Mo (Noah Emmerich - I looked it up! ...on the INTERNET! He was in Copland, too. Oh, yeah! HEY, so was Michael Rappaport! I forgot! Man, the internet is HANDY!) is really well cast as the used-to-be-one-of-the-guys-but-now-has-a-wife-and-kids dude. And Timothy Hutton, well hell, I just LIKE that guy. He's just a good actor, damn it. Rosie O'Donnell is annoying in this movie, but she is in real life too, so that's pretty much on-the-money. Excellent job. Everyone.

And "Sweet Caroline" rules every time.  - tom, Dec 10, 2003

AT A GLANCE: BEAUTIFUL GIRLS (1996)

# OF TIMES I LAUGHED: enough, okay

SOUNDTRACK: The good songs are good. The bad ones are easily ignored. Fucking Jethro Tull "Locomotive Breath" is in this movie. Think about that for a minute. FUCKING LOCOMOTIVE BREATH DUDE. And Sweet Caroline okay.

WORTH OWNING? yep yep

BEST LINE: "Stay cool, Willie. Stay cool forever."

SEE ALSO: CAN'T HARDY WAIT (for the nostalgia factor), KICKED IN THE HEAD (for a dose of Rappaport)
