So of course I was going to see a movie named after a Replacements song. But boy-howdy, was I surprised when I actually LIKED it. Seth Green is excellent in this under-appreciated bauble, as is that goofy kid from that Tom Hanks movie about that band. "That Thing You Do"? Is that it? Or is that some Greg Kinnear romantic comedy? Whatever. Can't Hardly Wait scores points for giving a little role to the guy that played Nick on Freaks and Geeks, a bigger role to that kid from Sliders, and a bonus for mentioning Kurt Vonnegut as a man to be looked up to. Also features Dharma (sans Greg) as a stripper, which isn't as good as it sounds, but isn't bad. Most of the characters are typical stereotypes, and are played off pretty well. The jocks are exactly what you'd expect, and so are the geeks. I thought the jocks were funnier than the geeks, but that's probably because I was a geek, so I'm a bit more critical of the ol' portrayal. The one curveball this movie had was this one guy who's on ER now, wearing a silky shirt, trying to make time with his cousin, who is played by Jennifer Love Hewitt. That sort of creeped me out. This is what you'd call a "good date movie" or "something your girlfriend won't despise and/or fall asleep during". This film follows the classic John Hughes big-crazy-hedonistic-night-followed-by-sobering-insightful-morning formula, but doesn't botch it as most others do. - tom

# OF TIMES I LAUGHED: lots and lots SOUNDTRACK: too eclectic for it's own good. For every Replacements, there's a Smash Mouth lurking. Points added for having a snippet of an unreleased Soul Coughing song in the movie. Points deducted for not putting it on the soundtrack. WORTH
OWNING? yep yep BEST
LINE: "Damn! Why you always wastin my FLAVAH?" IF

- david, Oct 13, 02 Tom might better remember -- or at least be able to check, on account of he owns the movie and I don't -- but I *think* it was a song called Nevada or maybe The Woolly Imbibe (same song -- I just don't know which one is the correct title). Good song. Great band. I miss them. Anyway, I hope that helps. -Shawn, No-Shadow Kick, Oct 14, 02 Do you know the quote and the author that is on Lauren Ambrose's yearbook page? - Maria, August 18 2003 "Christ, we like the movie. We're not goddamned freaks about it." - Tom, No-Shadow Kick - 2003
