MOVIE REVIEW: THE THOMAS CROWN AFFAIR (1968)

Thomas Crown is one odd fella.  In any other movie, I think he would've been the bad guy.  At no point during this film does the character show himself to be particularly redeemable in any way, save his love for dunebuggies.  He's cocky, chicks dig him because he looks just like Steve McQueen, he laughs heartily when alone, and his entire diet is delivered to him via large brandy snifters.  What's not to love, I guess.  It's strongly implied that he's a brilliant master criminal - at least on the video box - yet Faye Dunaway figures out the crux of his heist plan by thinking really hard about it for a few minutes, then pausing in a schoolyard to exclaim "That's it!".  The chess scene is one of the finest or funniest moments in film history.  If only they had been on a train, the scene could've ended with an external shot of it racing headlong into a tunnel.

This movie is less of an action/thriller and more of a clash of two pushy, egotistical souls.  With their cat-and-mouse game of deciding which one of them is prettier.  The movie ends with Faye crying, so I guess Steve won.  His sunglasses defeated her large-brimmed hat.  Totally good movie. - tom, july 29 01

OPENING CREDITS: Fucking excellent, and beautifully referred back to throughout the movie.

COOL OLD CARS: Nice Ford wagon, plus countless nice background vehicles.  I myself am not a big fan of dunebuggies.  Especially McQueen's big stupid one.  Wow, was he doing the real driving?  Look out for that.  Sand.

BAD BOSTON ACCENTS? Nothing will ever be as bad as Rob Morrow in Quiz Show.  Dude sounded like Colonel Sanders with gumdrops stuffed in his cheeks.  Well, there's Blown Away, too...

SOUNDTRACK: Main theme song is horrible horrible horrible.  Naturally, it won an award.

BEST LINE  "Ha! Ha! Ha!" (pause) "Ha! Ha!"

WORTH OWNING? Oh, yeah.  Sure.

READER'S COMMENTS : THE THOMAS CROWN AFFAIR

Actually, it seems that you suffer from 'reverse snobbery',you mention the Ford station wagon, but not the Rolls Royce MPW (thats 'Mulliner Park Ward' if your not sure). You also say your 'not a big fan of dunebuggies' .......whats that got to do with anything? .....bit of a stupid thing to say about a film. You go on to say your favorite line is "ha ha ha"............come on, your review is more about you than this film! What the hell are you on, 'Windmills of your mind' is a beautiful and original song. Maybe you would prefer something less challenging.

Actually, it seems that you're accustomed to the sort of movie reviews where the reviewer paraphrases the description of off the back of the videocassette box and then follows it up with a "thumbs up" or some insipid variation off of the "5-star" rating system.

A. The Ford Station Wagon is a cool old car, in my opinion. The Rolls Royce MPW is not, in my opinion. While "old" and "car" are fairly qualitative terms, "cool" is not. I found the Rolls Royce to be "crappy". I found the dune buggy to be "crappy".

B. My favorite line from The Thomas Crown Affair is "Ha! Ha! Ha!" (pause) "Ha! Ha!". Steve McQueen's character, Thomas Crown, delivers this line of dialogue at several different key points in the film. I fail to see how this comment relates in any way to the reviewer.

C. "Windmills of Your Mind" sucks. The only challenge the song provides is the daunting task of sitting through it without running into the kitchen for chips.

Dude. "Windmills of My Mind" is an awful song. You're SO on-the-mark.
The Noel Harrison should be ashamed.
How could you review this flick without mentioning the god-awful split-screen montages?!
Hey, I've got nothing against Split-Screen - unless it slows the movie down to a crawl.
Polo is AWESOME!
Gliders are AWESOME!
Steve McQueen is AWESOME!
What the HELL happened to Faye Dunaway? Maybe we should add her to the list of Actors who stopped being interesting after she kicked Coke? (Hell, she was married to J.Geils' Peter Wolf and all .. .)
Where's your review of NETWORK? Ned Beatty "kicks" ass.

What about the incredible cinematography for 1967(8)? This was one of the first movies that ever incorporated several screen actions clips on one screen to see the characters actions simultaneously. This movie is epitomized by the chess scene as the analogy for the plot ... the chess game between McQueen and Dunaway, etc. By the way, McQueen's character is SO OLD MONEY and what could be greater than having so much money that you are bored with life - needing to play chess with life to have fune???? Dune buggies, Rolls and great cigars doesn't so bad to me!!!

I'm with Linda. I sorta liked the split-screen stuff.
